Engineering Overview
Introduction
The Engineering Division, as well as the entire Stover business organization, originated from Dr. Enos L. Stover's initial one-man wastewater process engineering and consulting business established in 1984. From its inception through July, 2000, the division grew to include an in-house detail design team, providing a full range of services including wastewater treatment plant design/build and construction management services.
In early 2000, it was determined by company management that the company's efforts to provide, in-house, the full range of wastewater treatment services for its clients had in fact detracted from the company's core area of business, namely process design engineering, process consulting and operations services. It was determined that full-range services could be better and more economically provided through teaming arrangements with other established and well staffed engineering companies which can provide, and whose core area of business is, the detail design and construction engineering services, leaving The Stover Group to concentrate on what it does best.
As a result of this management decision, the division's detail design and construction engineering group was closed, and all detail design and construction engineering is presently being provided by teaming with other companies.
Facilities
The Engineering Division currently occupies extensive office and library space, which includes a filamentous bacteria identification laboratory (shared with the Operations Division) and an extensive treatability study laboratory.
Resources & Equipment
The Stover Group has extensive equipment and software for support of the Engineering Division, including state-of-the-art computers, drafting and printing supplies, special purpose test and study equipment, and bench-scale and pilot plant treatability study units. The current specialized equipment inventory includes the following:
- Windows® based workstations and servers; productivity, drafting (CAD), graphic design, and development software; printers and HP designated plotters.
- Filamentous bacteria identification laboratory, consisting of high resolution bright field and phase contrast microscope, video imaging and digital data capture software and hardware, FIL-IDENTPro® software, supporting computer hardware, and miscellaneous slides, dye solutions, etc.
- Trailer Mounted Thermophilic Activated Sludge Pilot Plant.
- Bench-scale aerobic treatment reactors (internal and external recycle), and associated pumps, mixers, timers, etc.
- Bench-scale anaerobic treatment reactors (suspended growth and fixed-film), and associated pumps, mixers, timers, etc.
- Biological nutrient (Nitrogen & Phosphorus) removal bench-scale unit, including feed pumps and clarifiers.
- Jar-test equipment.
- Dissolved air flotation cell, portable.
- Bench-scale sludge dewatering study equipment.
- Ozone treatability equipment, including ozone generator, wet-test meter, gas scrubbing bottles and dew point analyzer.
- Glass air stripping columns for VOC removal studies, including analysis of fouling problems, including feed pumps, instrumentation, various packing materials, portable compressed air and piping.
- Laboratory equipment for the following analytical testing: COD, BOD, TSS, VSS, pH, conductivity, nutrients, metals, TKN, phenols, alkalinity, hardness, chlorides, volatile fatty acids, ozone, and other wet chemistry for treatability, pilot study and operations support, specifically including spectrophotometers, COD reactors, pH meters, DO probes, ovens, muffle furnace, analytical balances, TKN apparatus, incubators, jar stirrers, and desiccators.
